As we watch the latest happenings against the Iranian capital of Tehran, I’m feeling especially grateful to be on this side of the world. Some of my dear friends are still in Tel Aviv and have had to take shelter in bunkers. “Too blessed to be stressed” could not ring truer right now.
How did this war between Iran and Israel escalate so quickly, especially under a self-proclaimed anti-war American president? No one really has a solid answer for how things took such a sharp turn or why Trump suddenly shifted his stance.
Today’s events between Iran, Israel, and the U.S. have taken an alarming turn. Israel launched a massive airstrike campaign overnight, hitting dozens of Iranian targets that include military bases, nuclear sites, and even areas close to Tehran. It was one of the boldest moves yet, and it immediately had everyone freaking out about the possibility of Iran declaring war. Missile sirens went off across Israel, especially in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem. Dozens of ballistic missiles were launched toward Israeli cities. Israel’s defense systems intercepted a lot of them, but not all. Now my friends are stuck in Israel while war looms over the Middle East and U.S. allies are scrambling to figure out their next move.
Trump, who’s just returned from the G7 summit, is now saying there won’t be a ceasefire unless Iran gives up its nuclear program completely. Back in Iran, people are panicking. Fuel stations are jammed and there’s a real fear that the worst is still ahead. At the same time, hundreds of American students on Birthright trips in Israel have already been evacuated by cruise ship and flown back home.
Everyone was on edge today as we waited to see what Trump would do. He left the Situation Room this afternoon after about an hour of tense talks with his security team on whether the U.S. should hit Tehran. From where I stand, it seems like Trump’s choices might be influenced by the years of assassination threats against him. It wouldn’t be surprising if that’s playing into his decision-making now.
So where does this all go? Israel looks like they’re just getting started and they’re pushing the U.S. harder than ever. Iran still has missiles to launch but they might not be able to keep up for long. American companies are already being warned to get ready for cyberattacks connected to all of this.
Long story short, this is no longer just talk or rising tension. This is war, and it’s moving fast. The next 48 hours are going to be critical.
